Helping Small Businesses Take Action For Greater Marketing Results!

OK, the title may be misleading! However there is a marketing point that is relevant. First thought, let us consider the “media” and how it affects us. There is a lot of talk about social media these days and the more general term is applied to the coverage of events on TV such as the swine flu, the economy etc. On many occasions the media is actually blamed for hyping the stories and getting us all worried when it’s not that bad.

What is your responsibility? Blaming the media is easy but has a couple of flaws:

  1. Who is “the media” anyway? It’s a convenient label but it isn’t really helpful
  2. Where is the critical thinking? Just because you hear something on TV, Radio, online via Social Media, Internet news etc. what makes you HAVE to accept it? It is your responsibility to take it in, process it and make sense of it before coming to your own conclusion. You don’t have to blindly accept everything.

Here is the small business marketing side. You don’t have to accept everything you see and hear as it relates to marketing your small business. Everyone has an opinion, lots of people have things to sell you, you get to pick what is appropriate but you need to think critically about it.

When you are clear about your business and it’s focus, this becomes a whole lot easier. For example, when everyone is telling you something is a can’t miss opportunity, you will be able to critically evaluate whether is fits your marketing strategy, and indeed your overall business plans. If not, however much it looks on the face of it to be a great deal, you can make an informed choice.

Keeping on this road is extremely important for effective marketing. If you believe every opportunity that passes before you is the next best thing, there is a danger that you will keep on trying things without a plan. That is the route to inconsistency and wasted effort.

So, the media analogy applies to marketing. It always pays to be well informed. However you have the power to evaluate what you see critically, and decide what to do with that information. Make sure it is getting you toward your marketing and business goals!
